What’s a Shaman … and Why Would You Want to Go Into the Dark?

What is a shaman?

A shaman is someone who acknowledges, knows, and works with the world of energy. You might call this the non-ordinary world or the unseen world. And there is a lot that is unseen.

Sometimes I get asked, “What is a shaman?” or people without even knowing they are doing so turn away, think it’s too much. Sometimes people feel drawn to the work of a shaman, and are unsure about the word, the meaning, the world view. They are simply answering a call.

We are 99.9999% energy, and shamans know that this 99.9999% energy is just as important as the world of matter; or perhaps it’s the only focus that's important. For the shaman, the energetic part of us matters more than our physical selves of 0.00001% matter.

Face your energy to the East to the new beginning. As we come toward the new moon, we come into a time of new beginnings. A new lunar cycle. What else can begin anew?

This week in our Sacred Sunday meditation, we explore going towards the new moon with sweet darkness, love to nourishing bodies, and deep rest.

Take time to follow your breath and go into the darkness: Sacred Sunday Meditation: Love & Darkness, Rest and Renewal.

This week I encourage you to open to the great mystery and energy that invites us to open our hearts in each moment and to approach each moment with deep curiosity, with an open heart, a wakeful reverence.

This week, I invite you to set an intention to rest, to renew, to connect with the sweet darkness as this moon fades halfway to the new moon, the dark moon.

To go in the dark with a light is to know the light.

To know the dark, go dark. Go without sight,

and find that the dark, too, blooms and sings,

and is traveled by dark feet and dark wings.

—Wendell Berry

How do you feel about going into the dark? What are you releasing into the darkness?

This week, we explore the darkness together. This week, like every week, we come together, breathe, enter into our heart. Each week the purpose is the same, and the practice is different. We come into energy in different ways. We tune into the phases of the moon and other natural cycles. We tune into different chakras or energy centers in the body. I might bring a different theme or focus; you might bring a different intention.

Each week is an invitation into your own heart, through breath and imagery. Each week we move into the realm of energy.

Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find

all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.

~ Rumi

A shaman can help you find those barriers and break them down. Shamanic healing sessions can reset energy, restore health, and allow you to realize your dreams.

The shaman works between the worlds of energy and matter. The Sacred Sunday practice is about connecting to the energy and frequency of love. You can access past Sacred Sunday meditations anytime or join me live each Sunday morning at 8 AM ET.

What has called you to the shamanic? the world of energy and Love/Magic?
